2020 Ford Super Duty’s Max Towing Capacity is 37,000 Lbs

Announced in February, the new 2020 Ford Super Duty will start shipping to dealers by the end of the year. In order to keep customers waiting—and crush the hopes of competitors in the process—the company has been releasing the all-important specs and other technical details one month after another.

So, after adding an F-600 model, introducing the spectacular Tremor Off-Road Package and confirming the power of its new 7.3-litre gasoline V8, Ford is now making the biggest statement of all by listing the many incredible feats achieved by the third-generation 6.7-litre Power Stroke turbo-diesel.

Are you ready? Here they are:

  • 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque
  • Maximum conventional towing of 24,200 pounds
  • Maximum fifth-wheel towing of 32,500 pounds
  • Maximum gooseneck towing of up to 37,000 pounds

That’s right. These numbers are correct. Obviously, they’re all better than the outgoing Super Duty, but more importantly they’re the best in the heavy-duty pickup segment.

In comparison, the Ram Heavy Duty’s 6.7-litre Cummins engine generates 1,000 pound-feet of torque and can tow up to 35,100 pounds. Meanwhile, the 6.6-litre Duramax turbo-diesel in the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD produces 910 pound-feet of torque and can pull up to 35,500 pounds.

As for the aforementioned 7.3-litre V8, it delivers best-in-class power (430 hp) and torque (475 lb-ft) among gasoline V8 engines. And the standard 6.2-litre V8 trumps all with a maximum payload capacity of 7,850 pounds.

Durability shouldn’t be an issue. To this day, Ford engineers have tested the Super Duty over 30 million kilometres and counting. By the way, an all-new 10-speed heavy-duty TorqShift automatic transmission is available with all engine options for 2020.

The new Super Duty also stands out with class-exclusive available Pro Trailer Backup Assist and Trailer Reverse Guidance technologies, plus a FordPass Connect embedded 4G LTE modem with Wi-Fi access for up to 10 devices.
