2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Receives Many Updates, Too

Just yesterday, we told you about various updates to the GMC Sierra 1500 for 2020. Naturally, its Chevrolet twin is not going to be left unchanged.

Silverado 1500 customers will have more selection, more capability, more technology and simply more bang for their buck, insists Tim Herrick, Chevrolet’s executive chief engineer of full-size trucks.

“For 2020, we are delivering more in each of these areas,” he said. “As a result, the Silverado now offers customers the most towing capability of any light-duty pickup and the most affordable light-duty truck with more than 400 horsepower.”

Powerful Gasoline and Diesel Engines

While prices have not been announced yet, you should know that more than half of 2020 Silverado 1500 trim levels will be available with the 6.2-litre V8 rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque (or 435 and 469, respectively, when selecting the Performance Upgrade Package), paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

For the Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss, that power is paired with a two-inch factory suspension lift and the Z71 Off Road Package with a locking rear differential, skid plates, Rancho mono-tube off-road shocks, 18-inch wheels and Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires.

Also new for 2020, the 6.2L V8 is available on Silverado RST 4x4 models, increasing the truck’s maximum towing capacity to a class-leading 6,078 kilograms (13,400 pounds) when properly equipped.

As mentioned in the Sierra story, because the EPA’s emissions certification process took longer than expected, the new 3.0-litre Duramax inline-six turbodiesel engine announced for 2019 will instead debut with the 2020 models. Also mated to the 10-speed automatic, it produces 277 horsepower and, more importantly, 460 pound-feet of torque at just 1500 rpm.

The Duramax will be available on LT, RST, LTZ and High Country models. Its official towing capacity has yet to be specified, however.

As for the 5.3-litre V8, it can now be paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission on certain Silverado trims. This combination comes standard on the LT Trail Boss and is optional on the High Country trim. Meanwhile, the 2020 Silverado Custom will be available with Chevrolet’s 2.7-litre turbo and eight-speed autobox.

Trailering Made Easier

Similar to the all-new Silverado HD, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 benefits from an expanded list of towing technologies. In particular, it offers up to 15 unique camera views, including a segment-first transparent trailer view. Using a tailgate-mounted camera and an available accessory camera mounted on the rear of the trailer, the system creates a composite image allowing the driver to virtually see through the trailer—perfect for parking lots and other tight areas.

Finally, the updated Silverado is available with Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera on LT, LTZ and High Country models. A single high-mounted camera behind the rear-view mirror scans the road and uses proprietary software and algorithms to maintain a safe distance to the vehicle ahead. The system can bring the truck to a complete stop and is integrated with the stop/start capability of the engines to help optimize efficiency.

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will go on sale in Canada in the next few weeks.
