2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Gets Key Powertrain and Towing Updates

Light-duty pickup manufacturers are engaged in a cut-throat battle and they simply cannot rest. Take the GMC Sierra 1500 for example. Completely redesigned for 2019 with the industry-first MultiPro tailgate, it is getting a series of updates just a year later.

For starters, the 2020 Sierra 1500 will be available with the upgraded ProGrade Trailering System introduced earlier this year on the new Sierra HD to make towing duties easier. It offers up to 15 unique camera views, including a segment-first transparent trailer view to help optimize the driver’s view around the truck and compatible.

How does it work? With a tailgate-mounted camera and an available accessory camera mounted on the rear of the trailer, the system creates a composite image allowing the driver to virtually see through the trailer—perfect for parking lots and other tight areas.

Meanwhile, the in-vehicle Trailering App has updated features and enhanced mobile integration for 2020. Owners will now be able to create and edit trailer profiles through the myGMC mobile app and load them into their Sierra, saving time when hooking up for the first time. Owners will also have the option of making a trailer profile shareable for easy transfer of trailer specs. You will even receive maintenance reminders and trailer mileage information to your phone.

Continuing with technology enhancements, the 2020 GMC Sierra adds Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera. Available on SLT, AT4 and Denali trim levels, the system uses a single high-mounted camera behind the rearview mirror and can even bring the Sierra to a complete stop if traffic conditions require so.

When it comes to powertrains, you should know that the 10-speed automatic transmission will now be offered with the 5.3-litre V8 engine—standard on Sierra Denali and AT4 models and available on all four-wheel drive Sierras with the SLE trim level and above. This ensures a greater number of owners will enjoy smoother performance and increased efficiency.

Because the EPA’s emissions certification process took longer than expected, the new 3.0-litre Duramax inline-six turbodiesel engine announced for 2019 will instead debut with the 2020 models. Mated to the 10-speed automatic just like the gasoline V8, it produces 277 horsepower and, more importantly, 460 pound-feet of torque at just 1500 rpm—excellent for off-road use and pulling heavy loads (official towing capacity has yet to be specified).

The 3.0-litre Duramax will be available on Denali, AT4, SLT, Elevation and SLE models.

Finally, as previously reported, the GMC-exclusive CarbonPro pickup box will start production in early June and begin appearing at select dealerships later in the summer. Available on Denali and AT4 models, it promises best-in-class dent, scratch and corrosion resistance.

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 will go on sale in Canada shortly and pricing will be announced closer to launch.
