2020 Chevrolet Trailblazer Announced... in China

Rumours of the Trailblazer nameplate making a comeback have not been exaggerated, after all. Following the launch of the midsize Blazer last year, General Motors unveiled the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Trailblazer at Auto Shanghai today.

Naturally, the exterior is largely inspired by that of the larger Blazer. This is most evident in the combination of the large front grille and thin headlights, but there are also similarities in the rear and the design of the roof pillars.

Chevrolet designers worked to give the Trailblazer a unique personality by adding sharp character lines on each side and more pronounced claddings around the 17-inch wheels. The show car in China is actually a Redline variant with red accents on the wheels, mirror caps and lower front fascia (sorry, those are not tow hooks, but rather just a red stripe).

Reports indicate that a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine sits under the long hood, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. However, since the 2020 Chevrolet Trailblazer is based on General Motors’ new VSS-F global platform and will be sold all over the world, powertrain options will vary from one market to another.

In North America, the Trailblazer is expected to slot just above the current 1.4-litre turbo Chevrolet Trax as the bowtie’s latest answer to the Honda HR-V, Ford EcoSport, Nissan Qashqai, Mazda CX-3 and other subcompact crossovers. Despite the name, it likely won’t be able to match the Subaru Crosstrek or Jeep Compass in off-road performance.

We’ll keep you posted when further details are announced.
