2020 Subaru Legacy Presented at the Toronto Auto Show

The seventh generation of the Legacy sedan made its world debut at the Chicago Auto Show last week, and it’s now revealed for the first time in Canada in Toronto.

Now built on the Subaru Global Platform that underpins all the brand’s new models, the Legacy is said to be quieter, more stable and more agile. The company also touted the new generation as being “the most advanced Legacy in the model’s 30-year history,” while front-seat shoulder room, hip room and rear-seat legroom have increased.

The sedan’s base powerplant remains a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, but it’s been heavily revised to produce 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. Also found in the redesigned 2019 Subaru Forester, this engine also features direct injection and automatic start/stop technology, matched to a continuously variable automatic transmission.

The old six-cylinder engine offered on more upscale trim levels is gone, replaced by the turbocharged, 2.4-litre flat-four that’s found in the 2019 Subaru Ascent. Equipping the Legacy XT variant, it produces 260 horsepower as well as 277 pound-feet of torque between 2,000 and 4,800 rpm, and according to Subaru, it provides the sedan with a 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) time of 6.1 seconds. The 2.4-litre engine is also managed by a continuously variable automatic.

Obviously, every Legacy is equipped as standard with the brand’s full-time, Symmetrical all-wheel drivetrain. The 2020 Subaru Legacy’s fuel economy is expected to improve compared to the outgoing generation.

The big news inside is the availability of a new 11.6-inch touchscreen, mounted vertically on the centre stack. The screen can be split to display two types of information such as navigation and audio at the same time, for example. Base trim levels get two seven-inch screens. Other available features include a Wi-Fi hotspot (data package required), a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats and a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system.

Pricing hasn’t yet been announced, but the 2020 Subaru Legacy will go on sale in Canada this fall.
