Mercedes-Benz Unveils the Redesigned 2020 GLE

Mercedes-Benz has just revealed its totally redesigned midsize luxury SUV. The GLE will benefit from new powertrains, new technology and a third-row seat option when it goes on sale in early 2019.

Introduced as the M-Class back in 1997, renamed for the 2016 model year, the GLE will enter its fourth generation and boast a wide variety of engines at launch. The North-American market will get the GLE 350, featuring a turbocharged, 2.0-litre four that develops 255 horsepower, while the GLE 450 will get a turbocharged, 3.0-litre inline-six with EQ Boost to produce 362 horsepower. Both are connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid variant will be added thereafter, in addition to a high-performance AMG edition.

A new AIRMATIC air suspension has been developed for the SUV, and what the brand calls its E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension can be added to that, which features individual control of each spring and damper. Thanks to a curve inclination function, this system counteracts body roll, pitch and squat for a more comfortable ride. The manufacturer is touting its suspension as the most intelligent in the world, as far as SUVs go.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE will also feature the brand’s new MBUX infotainment system that was introduced in the A-Class.

Pricing has not yet been announced, but the new GLE will make its public debut at the upcoming Paris Auto Show in October. It will once again battle the likes of the BMW X5, the Acura MDX, the Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90.
