The Sierra All Terrain is now the 2019 GMC Sierra AT4

At a private event in the wings of the New York Auto Show, GM introduced the brand-new 2019 GMC Sierra AT4, a vehicle that replaces the All Terrain version of the pickup. Famed for superior off-road capabilities, the All Terrain will henceforth be known as the AT4. This name will be used throughout the GMC lineup over the coming years. As is the case with Denali, GM wants to make it a sub-brand, but instead of luxury, it would be synonymous with off-roading.

Designed for adventure seekers who like to venture off the beaten track, the 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 includes standard equipment designed specifically for off-roading. This includes a suspension raised by two inches, skid plates, Rancho dampers and red trailer hooks. It's the equivalent of what Ford offers with its FX4. A little later in its life cycle, the vehicle will also be offered with an industry-first carbon fibre bed known as CarbonPro. Scratch, impact and corrosion-resistant carbon fibre panels will replace the metal ones that make up the bed lining.

Monochromatic style

The body is monochromatic and the grille, light contours and fenders feature a black chrome finish. The effect is excellent. Expect a lot of buyers to choose this version more for its appearance than for its mechanical specifications. The 2019 Sierra AT4 also boasts a Multipro liftgate that can be configured in numerous ways, including a running board that lights up! These features were recently announced on the new Sierra SLT and Denali.

Three engines have been confirmed thus far. The 5.3-litre V8 comes standard, but there's also an optional 6.2-litre eight-cylinder. An Duramax diesel inline-six rounds out the offer. The 6.2-litre V8 and the Duramax engine are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Other engines have been promised, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. A hybrid is definitely in the plans.

This pickup will include a first: the Traction Select System, which allows you to select different driving modes depending on terrain and road conditions. It varies the response of the accelerator, automatic gearbox and traction control system.

The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 will be available beginning this fall. Pricing will be unveiled at a later date.
