XPENG G3: a New Fully Electric, Intelligent and Chinese SUV

It seems as though every week in China, a new automobile manufacturer pops up aiming to conquer the EV market. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year, a company called XPENG presented an evolved version of its very first model, the G3.

It’s a fully electric, compact-sized SUV that’s available with all-wheel drive and that boasts a driving range of about 300 kilometres. According to the automaker, the G3 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

XPENG also states that the G in its name stands for “geek” while the 3 indicates the vehicle category. The brand is targeting a young audience with an attitude for exploration and innovation. Or, a geek lifestyle.

As is the case with the Tesla Model X, the G3 features a huge windshield that extends over the front passengers’ heads. Fun fact of very little relevance: the glass panel is said to be imported from Italy. On the SUV’s roof is a 360-degree camera that can record video to keep memories of our road trips.

Inside, a 12.3-inch LCD screen serves as the driver’s instrument pod, while a 15.6-inch HD screen is perched on the centre of the dashboard as the interface of the infotainment system that also incorporates voice recognition. In addition, this VUS offers advanced technologies such as active park assist, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow and remote control via a smartphone app.

The G3 is also equipped with 10 cameras and 15 sensors, allowing the vehicle to be, says XPENG, “the most powerful self-driving vehicle among all Chinese brands.”

On December 3, 2017, the very first XPENG vehicle was unleashed on Chinese roads. For now, the automaker hasn’t confirmed plans to sell the G3 in America. Well, if they presented it at CES, we’re assuming they’re serious considering it…
