The Most Affordable AWD Sport-utility Vehicles in Canada

To confront our harsh winters, a vehicle equipped with an all-wheel drivetrain has an undeniable advantage. The biggest selection of affordably priced models is found in the small SUV segment, and every automaker offers at least one of them in their product line-up.

The least-expensive AWD SUV currently on sale is the 2018 Mazda CX-3, which retails for 23 295 $ before freight and delivery charges. It’s followed closely by the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek and its MSRP of 23 695 $ as well as the 2017 Nissan JUKE and 2017 Nissan Qashqai, at $24,148 and $24,178 respectively. The top 5 is completed by the 2017 Honda HR-V, offered from $24,750 with all-wheel drive.

The 2017 Chevrolet Trax, the 2018 Subaru Forester, the 2017 Mitsubishi RVR, the 2017 Hyundai Tucson and the 2017 Kia Sportage all follow in order of price, all offering AWD at an MSRP ranging between $25,000 and $27,500.

Aside from the four-wheel drivetrains, each one boasts a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine and a modern automatic transmission. Some can still be equipped with a manual gearbox, if that’s what the buyer prefers. And all these SUVs provide a slew of advanced safety driving aids.

However, new models keep appearing on the market each year, and these days, the subcompact SUV segment is expanding rapidly. In the next few months, we’ll see the Hyundai Kona and the Ford EcoSport hit the market, among others. And let’s not forget the new generations of popular compact SUVs such as the Chevrolet Equinox, the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Jeep Compass and the MINI Countryman.
