Mercedes-Benz Concept EQA: World Debut in Frankfurt

In the coming years, if you spot the letters EQ on a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, it’s because it’s equipped with an electrified powertrain. Plug-in hybrid, as is the case with the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE and the Mercedes-Benz S 560e; fully electric, as is the case with the smart vision EQ fortwo; and hydrogen fuel cell, as is the case with the GLC F-CELL concept. All these vehicles were unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

The automaker also presented another vehicle of the future, the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQA. Inspired by the compact model range (A-Class, CLA and GLA), this two-door concept car features two electric motors. Their combined output can climb to as much as 268 horsepower, while its battery pack allows for a driving range of up to 400 kilometres on a full charge.

The Concept EQA also flaunts the design that future fully electric Mercedes-Benz EQ models will adopt, including a black front fascia that illuminates a fake grille as well as illuminated thin blue bodywork striping. However, the first fully electric production model will be the EQC.

“The Concept EQA shows how much fascination can fit into a compact car. It provides an example of how electric mobility might look like for our compact cars, because they are an important driver of our success,” says Hubertus Troska, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Greater China. “Around the world, many new customers have come to Mercedes-Benz through this vehicle segment. In Europe, the A-Class has a conquest rate of around 70 percent. In the USA, more than half of CLA owners are driving a Mercedes for the first time. And China is our biggest market for the GLA.”

Mercedes-Benz has announced that by 2022, each model in its line-up will offer at least one electrified powertrain.
