2018 Ford Expedition is all new

On sale since 2007 in its current form, the Ford Expedition is the brand’s biggest SUV and competes against other behemoths such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon, the Nissan Armada and the Toyota Sequoia. It’s a market segment that evolves at a snail’s pace, and likely one of the most profitable for automakers.

Ford has finally redesigned the Expedition, and although its dimensions haven’t been announced yet, thanks to the use of high-strength steel for the chassis and aluminum body panels—like the Ford F-150—results in a weight savings of 300 lbs. (136 kg). That brings the 2018 Ford Expedition down to a curb weight of about 5000 pounds, a little more in the case of the long-wheelbase Expedition MAX.

Power will come from the company’s twin-turbo, 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 that will be connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission. In the F-150, this powertrain produces 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. As before, four-wheel drive will be standard in Canada. Ford claims best-in-class towing capacity, and their Pro Trailer Backup Assist system will be available as well.

The new Expedition’s cockpit, which will seat up to eight people, will obviously gain a slew of modern technologies as well as comfort and convenience features. Among them will be active park assist, lane keep assist, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, a two-panel panoramic sunroof, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, SYNC 3 with Apple Carplay and Android Auto integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot and a 12-speaker B&O Play sound system.

The 2018 Ford Expedition will hit the market this fall and will be available in XLT, Limited and Platinum trim levels. It will make its first Canadian appearance at the Toronto Auto Show.
