Christmas Gift Ideas: The Good, Old-Fashioned Road Map

The advent of new technologies like smart phones and navigation systems may have you thinking that the good, old paper road map is headed for extinction. However, plenty of places still sell them and a lot of people can’t go without their faithful map folded tucked into the glove compartment.

That’s exactly why a road map isn’t a half-bad idea as a Christmas gift. Sure, people don’t use them as much as they did in the 1960s, but maps remain very useful nonetheless.

Firstly, a map is eminently practical in case of emergency. It doesn’t need a battery and will work regardless of the weather (except rain) or satellite reception. Leave it in the car along with a compass and you’ll ensure that the recipient will always find his or her way.

Secondly, a nice map can be used to plan small road trips or longer adventures—if you choose a map of North America, that is. All you have to do is open it up on a table, close your eyes and point to a destination. As long as you don’t land in water, you can hit the road. You can then circle the cities and villages that you travel through as a reminder of where you’ve been.

Finally, don’t forget the decorative aspect of maps. A framed map gives a professional look to any office. In an apartment or bedroom, it’s an invitation to travel.
