BMW Modifies 2 Series Naming Scheme

A short while ago, the nameplate strategy at BMW was pretty simple: the first number represented the Series, while the two other numbers indicated the car’s displacement. For example, the 318 was a 3 Series with a 1.8-litre engine, while the 328 had a 2.8-litre inline six.

Things are a little more complex nowadays. While the hierarchy is maintained (the 2 Series is smaller than the 3 Series, and both are dwarfed by the 5 and 7 Series), the rest of the numbers don’t mean much: the 328i has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit, the 335i has a 3.0-litre engine and the 340i has the same 3.0L inline-six, but with more power.

And it’s about to get even more complicated: for 2017, the 2 Series (as well as the 1 Series, which isn’t sold on our market) receives some modifications under the hood and new names.

The four-cylinder variant formerly known as the 228i will henceforth answer to 230i. It has a turbocharged engine displacing 2.0 litres and pumps out 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, an increase of seven horsepower compared to last year. The six-cylinder version is now named M240i—instead of M235i—and develops 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, which is 13 horsepower and 37 pound-feet of torque more than last year.

First Drives2015 BMW 2 Series Convertible: Still Fun, Even Topless
There’s something reassuring about BMW’s commitment to building open-top automobiles. Despite the relatively insignificant percentage of the overall market that convertible sales represent, it’s been more than two decades since a model year went by without at least one attractive and fun sun-loving model in the German brand’s line-up. The …

MUNICH, Germany – One hundred years have passed since Bayerische Motoren Werke was established. The German automaker was created when two engine builders joined forces on March 7, 1916. TechnologyBMW Next 100: The Car of the Future
MUNICH, Germany – When I was young, I used to leaf through books looking at sketches of cars of the future, which promised glass roofs and rocket engines. By the end of this decade, automobiles will have changed dramatically compared to the cars of the early 1960s. BMW is currently …
NewsBMW 1 Series Sedan: Only for China
Here, BMW’s least expensive sedan is the 320i. Starting at $39,990, its entry price isn’t for everyone. It seems like Chinese buyers have another option: in addition to the 2 Series Active Tourer sold in Asia and Europe, they can now opt to get a smaller four-door BMW. It is …
Test Drives2018 BMW M240i: Poor Man’s M Car
With the ever-growing proportions of the BMW 3 Series, BMW purists surely appreciated the introduction of a smaller model which gets back to the basics of a compact, rear-drive car with a powerful engine. Of course, I’m referring to the 1 Series which was introduced in Canada back in 2008.
