Ford Developing New 5.0L for Mustang

Displacing 302 cubic inches, the infamous Ford 5.0L engine of years past is still the single most recognized motor associated with the prancing pony badge. Although the onset of technology and environmental concerns has stolen the cast iron workhorse of incredible potential from the motoring enthusiast community, Ford has decided to bring back the 5.0L badge for another kick at the can.

Having only recently introduced the current car’s three-valve 4.6L engine, Ford has had little choice in their engine development program, as the current car’s 300 horsepower rating faces total annihilation in the face of the 400 horsepower Camaro SS and 376 horsepower Challenger R/T. Opting to live by the adage that there in so replacement for displacement, Ford is rumoured to have nearly completed work on a new engine, codenamed “Coyote,” as in Wily, as in the Road Runner’s arch nemesis. As anyone fairly aware of Mopar’s history will tell you, the Road Runner was Mopar’s most successful muscle car offering. Coincidence? Unlikely.

However, vague historical jabs aside, the Coyote looks to be one serious contender. Designed to supplant the 5.4L Triton motors in the F-series and Mustang GT500, the Coyote 5.0L is substantially lighter; a credit to its all-aluminum construction. Also, with 32 valves, the new 5.0L is reportedly putting out 400 horsepower in basic GT trim, with the GT500 horsepower figure to jump accordingly as well.
