A Long-range Electric Battery Pack Made In Canada

The aluminium producer Alcoa, in partnership with Phinergy, just unveiled their latest battery pack for electric cars. It is made of aluminium and uses air, and could hold more energy than current lithium batteries. How much more? According to Alcoa, their electric vehicle now has more than 1600 km of range!

According to Martin Briere, CEO of Alcoa Canada: “Automakers want technologies that enable zero-emission electric cars to travel distances that compete with gasoline-powered cars. The aluminum-air battery has the potential to meet that challenge using fully recyclable material with no CO2 emissions.” This technology was developed in collaboration with the Quebec government, and Alcoa's aluminium foundry in Baie-Comeau is ideally positioned to supply the material for these battery packs.

Up until now, the biggest problem with electric vehicles was the lack of range. Even with the advancements of the last years, a lot of people still can't consider an electric car simply because they wouldnt be able to commute in it. With Alcoa's new battery, an electric car could be able to travel 1600 km, more than enough for any automobilist!
